In the last week, we’ve experienced an earthquake and a hurricane here in the greater New York area. So, unless there’s a dormant volcano underneath Arthur Ashe Stadium (he said, knocking wood) it would seem that we’ve handled all that Mother Nature can throw our way, and we now can look forward to the unique torrent of talent that only the US Open can produce. On this Day 1 of the 2011 US Open, the courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center will be drenched in excitement, as a host of the game’s top names look to take their first step toward tennis’ toughest title. Roger Federer, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Mardy Fish, Petra Kvitova, and Gael Monfils, as well as two of the most talented of the up-and-coming American legion, Ryan Harrison and Christina McHale, all see action.
